In 1954, the Galerie Galanis in Paris hosted a solo exhibition for the Danish painter and printmaker Mogens Andersen. This period was highly formative for Andersen, who lived and worked in Paris starting in 1945, refining his signature abstract style alongside French modernists.

Rather than standard printed text flyers, galleries of this era frequently commissioned artists to create original, limited-run lithographs to act as the cover or face of their official exhibition invitations.

The lithograph showcases Andersen's mastery of dark, expressive, and calligraphic brushstrokes contrasted against a minimal background. It bridges his early fascination with still lifes ("Nature morte") and his evolution into pure, lyrical abstraction.

The beautiful print “ Rhinoceros in the sunshine” is made in relation to an art book with 28 prints, published in the 1970s. The book is titled "Journey in the jungle and on the savannah" and was created in a collaboration with Hans Scherfig himself who died in 1979.

Hans Scherfig was a Danish writer and painter whose work bridged sharp social critique and poetic imagination. As an author, he became famous for satirical novels such as Stolen Spring (1940) and Frydenholm (1962), where he exposed hypocrisy, injustice, and the rigidity of society. At the same time, his visual art like his vibrant “jungle paintings” filled with exotic animals and vegetation, revealed a more playful and decorative side, inspired by Rousseau yet distinctly his own. A lifelong communist, Scherfig combined politics, humor, and artistry, leaving behind a body of work that is both critical and enchanting.

Original lithographic poster with art by Pierre Alechinsky in relation to the student revolt in 1968. The poster was published in June and printed in 300 copies. The poster states “Il est pour l’etudiant celui qui s’etudie” (It’s for the student who studies himself). The student revolt was a period of civil unrest characterized by massive demonstrations, strikes, and occupations of universities and factories across France. The movement was driven by students and workers who demanded radical changes in the political, social, and educational systems. 

Pierre Alechinsky is a Belgian artist known for his significant contributions to the COBRA movement and his distinctive style that combines elements of calligraphy, drawing, and painting. Alechinsky's work often features organic and playful forms, fantastical creatures, and gestural marks. He employed a variety of mediums such as ink, watercolor, and oil paint to create dynamic and textured compositions. His style is characterized by a sense of movement, spontaneity, and an emphasis on the process of creation. Calligraphy played a significant role in Alechinsky's artistic vocabulary. He incorporated calligraphic marks, flowing lines, and expressive brushwork into his artworks, giving them a sense of energy and rhythm.

The design is a screen print from approx 1950 - 1960

While Cocteau originally discovered his passion for pottery later in life—creating over 300 unique earthenware pieces between 1957 and 1963 at the workshop of Madeline Jolly and Philippe Madeline in Villefranche-sur-mer, his distinctive graphic style was frequently translated onto fine porcelain.

Jean Cocteau (1889–1963) was a multi-talented French artist, writer and filmmaker, became one of the leading figures of twentieth-century avant-garde art.

Though he worked across many different creative fields, Cocteau considered himself primarily a poet. His style combined classical myth with surreal and modern imagery.
