Édouard Dermit, born Antoine, was the eldest of five siblings, born to parents who had migrated from Slovenia to work in the iron mines of Lorraine. Initially working as a miner in Bouligny (Meuse), he harbored a deep passion for painting, leading him to Paris in 1947. A chance encounter at Paul Morihien's bookstore introduced him to Jean Cocteau, who became both his employer and collaborator. He later admitted to having been Cocteau’s lover during this time.
